Book Review: Clockwork Princess

clockworkHOLY HELL. Cassandra Clare is a flipping genius! It’s been about 4 days since I finished reading Clockwork Princess and I’m still in complete shock. Writing a review that will express all of the thoughts swirling around in my brain without giving the plot away is going to be difficult. But for the sake of my fellow readers, I’m going to hold back my urge to blurt out everything that is spectacular and amazing about the ending and simply say “READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!” If you haven’t read The Infernal Devices series yet then go out and buy Clockwork Angel now because the final book in the series is beyond fantastic!  I laughed, I cried, and then I cried some more. Anyone going in to Clockwork Princess should be warned that tears are inevitable. To explain, here is a detailed account of my thoughts/emotions while reading (spoiler free….unless you actually flip to that page to find out what I’m crying about).

Pg. 1-50: Woohoo Action!

51-200: Oh crap. I’m getting worried….

200-232: Dammit. This doesn’t look good

233- 246: My heart is breaking. Great. I’m crying…

247-309: There’s always hope! Must. Stay. Hopeful!

310- 318: And my heart is officially broken. I’m sobbing now.

318-339: Tessa you idiot!!!

381- 403: Starting to feel better…

403- 420: Awww! Can’t stop smiling!

420- 443: Everything is getting better 🙂

444- 447: WHAT?! WHAT?! HOW?! WHAT?! So happy and confused at the same time!

447 – 462: Kickass!!!!

462-487: Uhoh….

488-513: Full out sobbing! My heart has broken into a million pieces again. I know it’s a good thing, but I’m still super upset for the characters.

514-545: Awww. Cute. But still kind of sad. I’m crying because it’s so cute and heartbreaking at the same time.

545- 555: Just when I thought I had stopped crying this happens. Can’t stop crying again. Ugh. I’m such an emotional sap.

555-568: WHAT?! WHAT?!!! HOW?! OMG. OMG. OMG. Full out sobbing again! Such a perfect ending! Everything has come full circle. I’m so happy and so sad at the same time!

As you can see, Clockwork Princess is a great mixture of cute, sad, and kickass moments. I like to think that I’m usually pretty good at figuring out how a book is going to end, but Clockwork Princess took me completely by surprise (although it probably helps that I haven’t finished reading The Mortal Instruments series yet, because I think the readers who have will be able to make one of the connections between the two books and  figure out one of the twists in the end).

Usually the final book in a series that I have enjoyed annoys the heck out of me because the authors rush the conclusion, or place the characters in a situation that I’m not fond of. This was definitely not the case with Clockwork Princess. In fact, I think its one of the BEST final books I have ever read in a series. Cassandra Clare definitely thought everything through and ended things in a way that readers can’t help but feel good about, even as the tears roll down their face.

Rating: 5 Stars!!!!!

  1. Wow, your glowing review has me wanting to run out and read this book right now! I can’t remember what happened in the last one though, so unless Cassie Clare does a recap in this one, I’m afraid I’ve got to reread the last one before I read this…darn it!

      • hmm okay, might need to get my hands on this sooner rather than later then! While at work today, I reread the synopsis cause I forgot what it was about and I got excited again!

  2. Literally my ONLY complaint in this whole book is that the dialogue sounds less natural than the previous Infernal Devices books. Otherwise I was right there screaming and crying with you.

  3. Literally my only complaint with this book is that the dialogue didn’t sound as natural as it did in the other Infernal Devices books. Otherwise I’m right there crying and screaming with you!

  4. I’m glad to see someone else loved it as much as I did! I have been scanning through the other reviews and I was pretty surprised by some people’s disappointment. I was the total opposite! I went into The Infernal Devices fully expecting to be disappointed, for the simple fact that it wasn’t going to be about Jace and Clary, but man I am so glad I decided to read them anyway! I loved loved loved this book. It’e been a long time since a read a series conclusion that made gave me a sense closure at the end [how many years since Deathly Hallows?:)], but she did a fantastic job! I’m glad I’m not the only one freaking out about it!

      • I think I like TMI more because I started reading them first. I read the first 3 before Clockwork Angel came out, so I think I was just more devoted to the characters. They are both pretty equal now though! So excited for City of Fallen Angels. You need to catch up!

  5. Yes, I just finished this book last week, and I tried to drag it out as long as possible, yet I couldn’t tear myself away. I completely agree with your thoughts throughout, especially both of the WHAT?! BUT HOW?! I definitely loved this series and I thought that Cassandra Clare ended it perfectly, there were so many emotions flying around and I loved every scene. I found the writing to be absolutely beautiful in this one as well.

  6. I loved this as well! My only complaint with it is that it’s over. I’m definitely looking forward to the last Mortal Instruments book now, but even more so the third series she’s planning about Jem’s great-great-(and so on) niece.
