Book Review: Vicious

“If Eli really was a hero, and Victor meant to stop him, did that make him a villain?
He took a long sip of his drink, tipped his head back against the couch, and decided he could live with that.”

What if you lived in a world where there was the possibility to become Extra-Ordinary? To gain powers that you have only ever dreamed about? To become just like the superheroes you’ve seen in comics and on TV? What if the cost of becoming Extra-Ordinary was your life? Would you risk it?

These are the questions posed by Victoria Schwab in her gripping and dark novel Vicious. Packed with beautiful writing, compelling characters, and suspense so thick you could cut it with a knife, Vicious explores the pitfalls of becoming over ambitious, and the consequences that come from having too much power.

The novel focuses on Victor and Eli, two college friends who find themselves working on a shared research project. Their findings are shocking: under the right circumstances, the power of adrenaline combined with a near-death experience can cause someone to become Extra-Ordinary. Determined to put their theory to the test, Victor and Eli experiment on themselves, but things go horribly wrong.

The book then moves into the future, and readers watch Victor as he breaks out of jail. After ten spent behind bars, Victor has only one thing on his mind: revenge. With fate seeming to work in his favor, Victor is able to hunt down his old friend with relative ease. Unfortunately, Eli has allies in his corner, and is equally determined to see Victor dead. The result is a tense and fast-paced narrative that will have you holding your breath to find out who will come out alive!

I’m not the only person to have LOVED Vicious. Check out some of the amazing things that other bloggers have said about this addicting read:

“I’d say I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but that would be a lie. It’s literally the best book I’ve read in the past few months, if not years. It’s an ambitious project, and yet Schwab totally nailed it.  –  Evie from Bookish  (her entire review of Vicious is absolute perfection!)

“The pacing could not have been better set for this predatory read. You can feel the ruthless, bloodthirsty atmosphere throughout, and the climax is nothing short of explosive. Even though there’s no cliffhanger, you’ll be left craving for more, like the aftertaste of a most delicious delicacy that is Victoria Schwab’s writing!” – Giselle from Xpresso Reads

” You guys, Vicious is fascinating. It’s like a Rubik’s cube and a graphic novel had an illicit affair and this is their love child.” – Meg from Cuddlebuggery

“If Vicious was a color, it would be grey. Or purple. Orange. Brown. Or every other color you can think of right now. There are no black and white characters. No black and white storyline. No black and white anything. For a book that is so creepy and villain-ish, Vicious is frighteningly colorful. ” – Eve from PaperGrey

I couldn’t have said it better myself! Vicious really is one of a kind! If you love comics, enjoy a good villain, or have ever wished that you had superpowers, then this is a book that you NEED to read! It will have you completely rethinking what it means to be “Good” and what it actually takes to be a “superhero.”

Rating: 5 Stars!!!
