I stole the idea for this posting from my friend Chelsey at Chels and a Book! Chelsey noticed that the excitement that she felt upon first purchasing a new book often ebbed away after having it sit on her shelves for months on end. Like Chelsey, I always buy a book with the best intentions of reading it right away, but generally find myself being distracted by books that I get from work or from publishers for review. When I finally find myself with the opportunity to read whatever I want, I just don’t feel like reading any of the books that I’ve bought! (I know….that’s terrible and sad)
As a result, Chelsey started writing a feature on her blog called Renewed Excitement which is all about motivating yourself to tackle your TBR pile, and rekindling the passion that you felt for those books when you first brought them home. So, without further ado, here are some of the books in my TBR pile that I’m trying to renew my excitement about!
1. The Ocean At The End Of The Lane by Neil Gaiman
Quick Synopsis: A middle age man returns to his family home to attend a funeral and suddenly remembers some of the strange occurrences that happened to him as a child.
When I Bought It: June 2013
Why I Was Excited: I LOVED Neil Gaiman’s book American Gods, and many of my friends couldn’t stop raving about how good his newest book was. Plus, at the time I was in the mood for reading something with a hint of Fantasy in it, and The Ocean At The End Of The Lane seemed to fit that description perfectly. It’s such a small and skinny book, I still can’t believe that I haven’t read it yet!
2. Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Quick Synopsis: A young business man discovers a dark and magical world that exists below the streets of London.
When I Bought It: February 2014
Why I Was Excited: Another Neil Gaiman book! I kept seeing Neverwhere pop up on some of the other book blogs that I follow, and it was getting nothing but rave reviews from everyone who read it, so I was really excited to read it for myself. I stumbled across my copy of Neverwhere at BMV books in Toronto, and couldn’t resist what a great price it was either!
3. Among Others by Jo Walton
Quick Synopsis: The story focuses on a young girl with magical abilities whose mother dabbles with dark forces.
When I Bought It: I received it in a gift bag from the Ontario Book Blogger meet up in October 2012!
Why I Was Excited: I LOVE magic, and the synopsis of this book sounded absolutely fantastic! I also discovered that it had won both the Hugo and the Nebula award, which are pretty prestigious! And the cover is so pretty 🙂
4. A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah
Quick Synopsis: The autobiography of a young man from Somelia who was forced to become a child soldier.
When I Bought It: Summer 2010
Why I Was Excited: Ishmael’s story sounded absolutely heart wrenching, and I wanted to learn more about how he managed to escape from Somelia. I was also on a bit of an autobiography kick at the time, having just finished reading The Glass Castle and Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, which were two biographies that I loved!
These are just a few of the books in my TBR pile that I’m hoping to get excited enough about to finally read. Have you read any of them before? What did you think of them?
