Review: Golden Son

For seven hundred years, my people have been enslaved without voice, without hope. Now I am their sword. And I do not forgive. I do not forget. So let him lead me onto his shuttle. Let him think he owns me. Let him welcome me into his house, so I might burn it down.

One of the great things about being a librarian/book blogger, is that I always have people asking me for book recommendations. Seriously, putting an amazing book in someone else’s hands and having them come back to tell me how much they loved it is the best feeling in the world!! During the course of 2014, the one book that I kept thrusting into the hands of almost everyone I met was Red Rising by Pierce Brown! If you read my Best Books of 2014 post then you’ll know that Red Rising was my #1 all time favourite read of the year! I loved it so much I read it twice!!

The only problem about LOVING a book so much? Having to wait for its sequel to come out!!!!! You can imagine my reaction, therefore, when I received an advanced copy of Golden Son in the mail just before Christmas! I literally screamed out so loud that my mom came running into my bedroom to see what the heck was going on! I then proceeded to dance around like a crazy person in the kitchen, the living room, the basement, the bathroom, pretty much the entire house. It was like Christmas had come early!

So, did the sequel meet my high expectations? After all, many sequels are known as simply being filler books in a larger story arch, and often don’t possess as much action and excitement as the rest of the series. Well, I am happy to report that Golden Son was AWESOME!!!! Full of action, intrigue, and plenty of drama, Golden Son had me on the edge of my seat the entire way through! And the ending was CRAZY! I’m already suffering from a serious case of book withdrawal and I’m counting down the days until the third and final book is released next year.

Golden Son picks up right where Red Rising left off. Darrow has graduated from the academy and is now a member of the Augustus household, working to protect the very man who killed his wife. Now that he is fully embedded in the world of the Golds, Darrow begins to put his plans in action to take down the Society from within. Unfortunately, obstacles arise in his way, including Darrow’s growing relationship with the Golds he befriended at the academy. Can Darrow trust his friends to help him? Or will they turn on him and betray him in the end? You’ll have to read to find out!!!

The Bottom Line: Golden Son is the perfect sequel, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat! Read Red Rising first if you haven’t already! Don’t miss out on this spectacular series!!!

  1. Ok I confess Red Rising had a rough start for me.. I had a few issues w/Eo, character motivations etc… BUT by the end I was hooked on the story. That being said I am pretty excited to start Golden Son and very glad to hear that it was a worthy sequel!!!
